Confessions of a Three-Year-Old and the Poker Lady

So remember how last week was a good week? Well, some of that had to do with the call from Kaydn Rye's doctor that his blood tests from two weeks ago were fine.

I didn't mention it before because I had already prayed about the situation and felt that G-d really had the situation in His hands. So really I was fine, really, for the most part, sometimes.

Anyway, so with all the remodeling and lead paint scrapping that we've been doing lately, even though we felt we had the lead dust contained, I was getting more and more concerned about Kaydn Rye's lead levels. When we redid Kaydn Rye's room we scraped off at least two layers of lead paint in addition to a million layers of wallpaper, and the lead paint exposure was one of those things that just kept playing and playing over and over in my mind until I finally had to do something about it.

And on top of that, the baseboards throughout the entire house are full of layers upon layers upon layers of 100 years of lead paint, but as we've been redoing each room I have just been going around and adding yet another layer of non-lead paint to the baseboards to contain the lead paint, which is exactly what I did with the baseboard in his room. But then, when we put the door to his room back on the hinges after we finished the hard wood floors, it scraped some of the paint off the baseboard. So then I had lead paint chips all over his floor.

He was in there with me just playing on his floor when it happened. And I was like, "Okay, nobody move. Freeze. I'm going to get some stuff to clean this up."

He just stood there like a nuclear bomb was about to go off until I had the situation under control.

But that's when I really started freaking out and got him an appointment to get his blood checked. That was an experience I do not want to relive.

He has never before had a blood test and we stopped vaccinating him (see Vaccines and the Hidden Dangers by HelloKittieMama) so we haven't done the whole needle thing in quite awhile.

He jerked away the first time the lady had the needle in, which slid right in beautifully by the way, so she had to stab him again. She was really good, and unlike me, who has to be stabbed at least three times (I'm not even exaggerating) before any blood arrives, Kaydn Rye apparently has good veins. So that was a plus. He didn't really think it hurt so bad going in but he was screaming that it hurt the whole time it was in. I was expecting the opposite to happen, but nevertheless, it was a bad experience for all involved.

And Kaydn Rye has never really been to the doctor except for a few ear infections in his early life, so I didn't want him to be afraid of doctors. The lady bandaged him up and we went downstairs to get our spacesuits on before going outside and I sat down with him to see what was going on in his head before we went any further.

I was telling him all about how that doctor was such a nice man and yada yada yada, really in an attempt to brain wash him into believing that doctors are wonderful and great.

He apparently took to the brain washing nicely and really all he had to say about his doctor is that he was brown and we are white. He thought that was pretty amazing. Up here we don't see too many people that are "brown," but obviously from our days in Memphis he has seen plenty of people of all colors. I said, "Yeah, he looks a lot of the people who live in Memphis, doesn't he?"

All he had to say to that was, "Yeah, I like the doctor, but I don't like that lady."

Then I started to give him the speal about how she was just trying to help him and yada yada yada. And then I even told him that maybe we were supposed to meet that lady so that we could pray for her.

He didn't buy that and said, "Well I am not going to pray her for her. That lady was poking me with her poker."

I left it at that and took him to his favorite place to eat - the chinese restaurant. He filled up on rice, and veggies and "chinese chicken" as he calls it and he was beginning to get over the fact that he had just been attacked by the poker lady.

What really got him over the poker lady was his new transformer toy. My mother had given him some money to go buy a transformer with and he had his money in tow just waiting to get his transformers.

He picked out some weird thing where Optimus Prime and Megatron duke it out like boxing robots.

Needless to say, after that, he was just fine. And he always enjoys having an ouwie to show everyone.

And we got home, he apparently had a little cough, so he said, "I think I need to go back to the doctor. I have a cough."

And then last week I finally got a doctor to call me back to tell me that everything was perfectly fine. I guess lead levels anywhere from 1 to 10 is perfectly normal, since there is no way possible for anyone to avoid lead completely in this world. From what I was told 40-50 is considered lead poisoning and anything over 10 really isn't good.

Well, Kaydn Rye's level, with all of the lead that has been exposed in our house lately, was a whopping 1.

It can only be G-d.

I guess I was freaking out because it's just one of those things where you are given something really great and then it's your responsibility to not screw it up. I just had thoughts running through my head of brain damage and every other terrible thing you can think of, and he was given to me in perfect condition so I just want to make sure I keep him that way.

Glad to hear that he is o.k. I grew up in a house that was over 100 years old and we had no thought to the dangers of it or anything. I'm glad you're a toughtful caring mom.

Whew - glad he's OK!

I saw on one of those "flip this house" kind of shows that there's this special coating you can put on lead paint that contains it, instead of removing it?
