Help Me Donate to Heifer International for Blog Action Day!

heifer international FOR EVERY COMMENT RECEIVED ON THIS POST THROUGH FRIDAY OCTOBER 17TH, I WILL DONATE $1.00 TO HEIFER INTERNATIONAL.

Here are at the blog party it's time for some serious social awareness chat over drinks and hors d'oeuvres. No, there will be no politics and there will be no discussion about how to achieve world peace. We will be discussing world hunger, and together we can help feed a family not just today and not just tomorrow, but for years to come.

Every desperate housewife needs to find an outlet for some charitable giving, and with Blog Action Day upon us (October 15th), this is the perfect opportunity to share about how you can help end world hunger and poverty.

Heifer International's motto has always been "teach a man to fish," meaning, "give a man a fish and he eats today, teach a man to fish and he will eat for a lifetime."

This organization is truly phenomenal. Heifer International donations and volunteers give the gift of both livestock and training to alleviate hunger and poverty and teach self reliance. The organization itself aims to end world hunger by giving to families who would otherwise probably be without food, the gift of livestock and the training required for them to grow and raise sustainable agriculture for their families. Those who receive gifts of livestock also have an opportunity to give back by donating livestock to another needy family. The chain of giving is extremely important to Heifer International.

On their web site, Heifer.org, it states that in 2007 Heifer International had 867 active projects in 53 countries/provinces and 28 U.S. states. Heifer projects around the world help families achieve self-reliance through the gift of livestock and training. Gifts are passed from recipient to recipient until entire communities are transformed.

And when I think of Heifer International, I often thing back to something Joyce Meyer once stated as she was talking about all the ministry projects she has lead. She once said something like, "You can go and minister the love of Jesus to people, but if they are starving, they need to eat. They first need their basic needs met. Instead of preaching to them all day, give them something to eat, give them shelter, meet their basic needs, that is what shows them the love of Jesus."

And while Heifer International is not affiliated with any specific ministry, I believe in their mission of ending world hunger by gifts of livestock and teaching. I believe in their mission so much that it wasn't too long ago that I realized I was being led to possibly take part in one of their study tours to really become involved in a project that will forever change lives. I'm still waiting on G-d to make that happen, maybe next year, but in the mean time, I am donating to their cause.

Heifer International's "online catalog" is probably unlke anything you've ever seen before. There you can add to your cart a flock of geese, a heifer, a water buffalo, a pig, a sheep, trees, a goat, all to be donated to a family who will soon experience a life changing experience through Heifer International.

Help me help them by "commenting for donations." FOR EVERY COMMENT RECEIVED ON THIS POST THROUGH FRIDAY OCTOBER 17TH, I WILL DONATE $1.00 TO GO TOWARDS THE PURCHASE OF A SHEEP. This sheep will provide meat and wool to a needy family to be used for food, wool and as an income source. The cost of one sheep is $120.00. Please help me make this happen!

Make sure to browse Heifer.org to find projects they are currently involved in along with upcoming study tours. You can also find their interesting online catalog.

P.S. Do you offer your design talent to help others with their blogs? For pay, of course!

I love Heifer International! I was lucky enough to visit them in Arkansas and hear first-hand how they work.

Yay for Blog Action Day!

Great idea for Blog Action Day! I'm a big fan of Heifer International! They are also great to keep in mind for the holidays - you can give a gift of chickens or a goat or whatever in someone's name to a person in need.

I plan on participating tomorrow (Didn't see where you were - I'm in the U.S. PDT.) My post will be about teaching children about poverty and giving.

What a great idea! You can read my post on if poverty is good for the environment on www.reallynatural.com tomorrow. For www.ecochildsplay.com, I will be writing about farm to school programs that can help alleviate the negative nutritional effects of poverty.

I think you are going to have a lot of comments. High five to you for your initiative.

Let's all fight hunger. My blogpost tomorrow will all be about poverty... here is in the U.S. and food banks, I think (although I haven't yet written it, so I might change my topics, as there are so many that I could deal with on that matter... isn't it a sad thing to think that poverty can be an endless reservoir for writing topics?)

Let's all do something, one person at a time.

Great idea! I received a Christmas gift years ago -- a goat or a cow from Heifer International. One of the best gifts I've ever gotten.

I'm also blogging on BAD08. It's a great cause!

What do you think? Are you going to go broke with the comments headed your way? You may get a flood of them since blogactionday tweeted about your site.

A wonderful organization ... keep up the good work!

This is wonderful Kate.
My mother and I are going in a better direction this Christmas season and, instead of exchanging gifts, our family will 'adopt' another family. We're looking into organizations now.
We need to take care of each other, don't we?

Thanks you for this effort. I work for Heifer and I have seen the impact of what our staff does. Much of our work is in building communities. We work with many womens groups. Helping them reclaim the powerful bonds between them and overcoming the effects of imposed isolation. I have seen first hand the difference in what women can do if they work together.

This blog is another fine example of what we can do when we work together.

It is very encouraging to see the support.

BTW, most of the employees give monthly donations and there is no pressure to do so. We believe.

Yes, checked Heifer. In Austria there are plenty of organisations and initiatives to help victims of poverty. Besides my family is & was engaged in some projects in Malawi. Poverty isn't the main problem there, but Aids-Hiv. With a little help form the US or Europe a lot can be accomplished in these poorer countries. So everybody keep up your good intentions. Thank you Kate for being engaged in these actions. And I wish everybody here good days ahead.

Wow ! This is the first time I have heard of Heifer International.

I think donating livestock is very practical especially in Africa.

Here to one more comment to make your donation possible.

Great idea - we have a similar charity in UK called Send A Cow. I hope you manage to send a sheep.

I think that the giving of livestock is an excellent program. I know a lady who has been a missionary for many years. She started a program like this with sheep in mountain villages, which was, and is, very successful. I pray that all goes well with this project.
